Mint Iced Tea
Origin

Washington State, USA

Cool spearmint from the irrigated valleys of eastern Washington.

Region
Pacific Northwest
Leaf
Spearmint

Washington leads the United States in spearmint, grown on irrigated farms in the Yakima Valley and the Columbia Basin. Hot, dry summers keep the plant clear of the rust that troubles damper regions, and long sunny days with cool nights build the bright, crisp flavour this single-ingredient tea is made for.

Commercial spearmint is a young crop here. In 1946 a company planted Scotch spearmint roots near Sunnyside, in the Yakima Valley, as an experiment, and the first harvest came in 1947. Neighbouring growers followed, and the valley became one of the most productive mint regions in the world.
